For sale -Antique Brass/Rosewood 6" Try Square Pat. 6/20/1869 & 4/16/1872.
Stanley Winterbottom's patent Number 2 try and miter (or mitre) square as pictured. It is marked "PATENTED APRIL 16, 1872" in an arched mark, and "PATENTED JUNE 29, 69" in a circle, both on the handle. The blade is not marked other than the graduations.Blade length, measured from the end of the blade to the far side of the handle, is nominally 6". Charles Winterbottom was granted patent 91,892, for his try square on June 29, 1869.Justus A Traut of Stanley was granted patent 125,858, for his improvements to the try square on April 16, 1872. Without the earlier trifoil escutcheons, and without the later Handy Grips, this would be the Type Two of this square, made from about 1888 to 1897.
